Hoffman, Stewart & Schmidt, P. C. is a locally owned and operated public accounting firm providing a broad range of audit, accounting, tax, management consulting and other financial services to closely-held businesses, nonprofit entities, and individuals.  The firm holds licenses to practice in the States of Oregon and Washington, and belongs to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ Employee Benefit Plan Audit Quality Center and Governmental Audit Quality Center.

What Makes HS&S Different

Two attributes that distinguish HS&S from other public accounting firms are:

1) We are small enough that personal service and attention to detail are standard benchmarks of our client relationships, and

2) We are large enough that no matter what professional accounting or tax need might arise, we have the resources and expertise to provide the appropriate level of service.

HS&S History

We trace our history to 1979, when Mel Nygaard, Burke Mims, Wally Hoffman, Ray Stewart, and Debbie Keller left the international accounting firm of Hurdman & Cranstoun to form Nygaard, Mims & Hoffman, P. C.  By 1980, the small office of 6 had grown to 14.

For the next 10 years or so we worked to develop a strong client base and solid, long-term relationships. We take these relationships seriously, and have invested a lot of time and effort in hiring and training the best possible staff to serve our clients’ specialized needs and to assist us in contributing to the betterment of our local community.

In 1994, founders Mel Nygaard and Burke Mims retired and, two years later, the firm’s name was changed to Hoffman, Stewart & Schmidt, P. C. At that time, the firm also relocated from its original east side office to the Unico U. S. Bancorp Tower (affectionately known as “Big Pink” by locals) in downtown Portland

Two specialized niche groups evolved: nonprofit and construction. We moved into the age of computers and e-mail, had our first web page published and continued to grow by leaps and bounds. HS&S currently employs an average of 25 personnel and is consistently recognized by several local business publications as one of the Top 15 CPA firms in the Portland metropolitan area.
